The concept of personhood (who is a person within a society) is the fundamental component of any selective concept of people. A distinction is maintained in philosophy and law between the notions "human being", or "man", and "person". The former refers to the species, while the latter refers to a rational agent (see, for example, John Locke's Essay concerning Human Understanding II 27 and Immanuel Kant's Introduction to the Metaphysic of Morals). Central issues of interest to people are the understanding of the human condition and the meaning of life, and survival. Religion, philosophy, and science show or represent modes and aspects of inquiry which attempt to investigate and understand the nature, behavior, and purpose of people. Sociology, economics, and politics represent modes by which people investigate how to maximize a collective survival strategy.

Islam recognizes the People of the Book as members of monotheistic faiths founded upon revelation related to its own faith. By contrast, in Judaism, the Jews are often said to be the chosen people, a concept modified by the Christian doctrine of "the Elect".

Why do people ignore or deny the existence of decent black people?
Q. Why is it that when the few black people that some people know are those rude, uneducated inner-city ghetto folk on welfare, they insist that every black is like that? There are some good and educated black people out there, but some of you people always just disregard them just because there are bad ghetto thugs! Why insist that blacks that can do anything nice and useful are like Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy? What about black people like astronomer Neil deGrasse Tyson? Why not make fun of the English instead?

A. Bruce ... I will give you my answer. I hope you and everyone who reads this will understand what I'm trying to say. First off ... no one on this entire planet will ever meet the majority of people in either group. Whites, Blacks, Indian (both Native American and those who live in the country of India or Pakistan) nor any other group of people. How is it possible for anyone to say that all people of (insert group here) heritage/culture are like this or like that when they can't possibly see them all let alone meet them all. Out of the tens of thousands of whites I have ever noticed ... the vast majority of them have been incredibly decent and kind people. In no way is it possible for all of them to be evil as many would say regardless… [cont.]

What do people often forget to consider when choosing a breed?
Q. What should people consider why starting to choose a breed? What is often overlooked when people fall in love with a breed? Does this generally happen because people don't consider it at all, or because they think they can make the dog adapt to it because they really want the breed even though it isn't a good fit? What were some of the worst breed choices you have seen people make?
Asked by CheezburgerNoms - Mon Nov 17 17:23:29 2008 - - 15 Answers - 0 Comments

A. The most overlooked would be the dog's energy level, grooming needs and basic breed characteristics. It's appalling to me that people think they can keep a breed like a german shepherd or border collie in an apartment. Or think a dog like a lab is good with a half hour walk a day. My pet peeve is people who buy a gorgeous, long-haired breed (afghans come to mind!), then keep their hair cut short because they're too bloody lazy to groom the dog. Then there's those who are dismayed because their terriers dig and bark, their beagles bay, etc. Too many people in this world of instant gratification are lacking the common sense to research a breed before getting it - then when they find they can't groom, train or exercise it, the dog ends… [cont.]

What causes old people to become childish in mentality?
Q. When they get older , many older people become childish thinking. Thinking about very trivial things and act like little children about things. What is the cause of this? I know it is a form of seniality , but could sombody explain what is happening in their body or brain? Also does this happen to people , say in their 30's as well. Or maybe some people just never really "grow up"? Why do some people who should be married and having adult life, still behave as little children? Something similar to above?

A. Dementia - the higher centers of the brain - the cerbral cortex - become dysfunctional as people age (esp if they have alzhemiers) and that is why people become childish. if people in their 30's behave like that, it usually means they have a personality problem

Quotes about people

Sourced

  • Human: a minor bipedal life form extant on a squalid little planet named Earth, in a backwater little-known galaxy; they are also known as 'Earthlings'. Humans are characterized by an exaggerated sense of self-entitlement, display a collective form of narcissistic personality disorder, and are generally regarded as the rednecks of the universe. Their problems appear to stem from a disingenuous form of business transaction they call 'land ownership.'
  • A person is smart. People are dumb, panicky, dangerous animals, and you know it.
  • Show me a man or a woman alone and I'll show you a saint. Give me two and they'll fall in love. Give me three and they'll invent the charming thing we call 'society'. Give me four and they'll build a pyramid. Give me five and they'll make one an outcast. Give me six and they'll reinvent prejudice. Give me seven and in seven years they'll reinvent warfare. Man may have been made in the image of God, but human society was made in the image of His opposite number, and is always trying to get back home.
    • Glen Bateman, The Stand (C&U), 3rd paragraph of Chapter 42, by Stephen King
  • I judge people by what they might be,—not are, nor will be.
  • The people will live on. The learning and blundering people will live on.
    • Carl Sandburg (1878–1967), American poet. The People, Yes (1936)
