Logic, from the Greek λογικός (logikos) is the study of reasoning. Logic is used in most intellectual activity, but is studied primarily in the disciplines of philosophy, mathematics, and computer science. Logic examines general forms which arguments may take, which forms are valid, and which are fallacies. It is one kind of critical thinking. In philosophy, the study of logic falls in the area of epistemology, which asks: "How do we know what we know?" In mathematics, it is the study of valid inferences within some formal language.

As a discipline, logic dates back to Aristotle, who established its fundamental place in philosophy. The study of logic is part of the classical trivium.

Averroes defined logic as "the tool for distinguishing between the true and the false"; Richard Whately, '"the Science, as well as the Art, of reasoning"; and Frege, "the science of the most general laws of truth". The article Definitions of logic provides citations for these and other definitions.

Logic is often divided into two parts, inductive reasoning and deductive reasoning. The first is drawing general conclusions from specific examples, the second drawing logical conclusions from definitions and axioms. A similar dichotomy, used by Aristotle, is analysis and synthesis. Here the first takes an object of study and examines its component parts, the second considers how parts can be combined to form a whole.

Logic is also studied in argumentation theory.

What is the difference between Logic Studio and Logic Express?
Q. What is the difference between Logic Studio and Logic Express? For a home user, what extra does Logic Studio hold? Is it needed?
Asked by Conor M - Tue Dec 11 03:04:00 2007 - - 2 Answers - 0 Comments

A. This all depends on how intense of a user you are. I'm a Music Producer and anything with "Express" in the name does me no good. But if you have a music hobby your trying to satisfy and your just messin around then express maybe for you. Unfortunately, express will give you the bare minimums and a lot of times these types of versions won't even allow you to save your work because they want you to buy the Full version. good luck!!

What is the logic in the spelling of Colonel?
Q. Yeah, I know very random question but with English being a difficult language, why is Colonel spelled that way? I know of silent letters but why an "L" AND THE "O' The way it's spelled it doesn't seem like it would be pronouced the way it is. What is the logic with this and the rules of spelling?

A. Logic really doesn't have anything to do with the pronunciation of this word which entered English from French which took from Italian derived from Latin. (see the source) While a lot of people complain about the rules of pronouncing English words, the truth is that English has borrowed countless words from other languages. Our language is richer because of it.

How do I record in Logic Pro audio without using external input?
Q. I'd like to record to Logic Pro audio tracks but from software running simultaneously, like iTunes or Quicktime, without having to record from the external input. This would help for sampling. It defaults to the external audio input everytime and there appears to be no internal input option. Any ideas?

A. Tricky one, but I'll tell you how you can do it. Open your Sound Control Panel, usually by right-clicking on the little speaker icon in the bottom right corner near the clock and then select Recording Devices. If you don't see that there then go into Control Panel. It's then in Hardware and Sounds > Sound Make sure you click on the Recording tab. Now you'll see a list of recording devices like Microphone, Line In, etc. You don't see internal audio there right? Vista hid it! Sneaky. Right-click on the blank area just below the list of devices and then click on "Show Disabled Devices" Then you'll see "Stereo Mix" appear. The right-click on "Stereo Mix" and select "Enable". You can then use "Stereo Mix" to record your internal… [cont.]

Logic and rationality

  • Logic is a systematic method of coming to the wrong conclusion with confidence.
  • Logic hasn't wholly dispelled the society of witches and prophets and sorcerers and soothsayers.
  • Logic is a large drawer, containing some useful instruments, and many more that are superfluous. A wise man will look into it for two purposes, to avail himself of those instruments that are really useful, and to admire the ingenuity with which those that are not so, are assorted and arranged.
  • Logic is one thing and commonsense another.
  • The want of logic annoys. Too much logic bores. Life eludes logic, and everything that logic alone constructs remains artificial and forced.
