Singular proof

Plural proofs

proof (plural proofs)

  1. Any effort, process, or operation designed to establish or discover a fact or truth; an act of testing; a test; a trial.
    • 1591, Edmund Spenser, Prosopopoia: or, Mother Hubbard's Tale, later also published in William Michael Rossetti, Humorous Poems,
But the false Fox most kindly played his part,
      For whatsoever mother-wit or art
Could work he put in proof. No practice sly,
      No counterpoint of cunning policy,
No reach, no breach, that might him profit bring.
But he the same did to his purpose wring.
    • c.1633, John Ford, Love's Sacrifice, Act 1, Scene 1,
France I more praise and love; you are, my lord,
Yourself for horsemanship much famed; and there
You shall have many proofs to shew your skill.
    • 1831, Thomas Thomson, A System of Chemistry of Inorganic Bodies, Volume 2,
A given quantity of the spirits was poured upon a quantity of gunpowder in a dish and set on fire. If at the end of the combustion, the gunpowder continued dry enough, it took fire and exploded; but if it had been wetted by the water in the spirits, the flame of the alcohol went out without setting the powder on fire. This was called the proof.
  2. The degree of evidence which convinces the mind of any truth or fact, and produces belief; a test by facts or arguments which induce, or tend to induce, certainty of the judgment; conclusive evidence; demonstration.
  3. The quality or state of having been proved or tried; firmness or hardness which resists impression, or doesn't yield to force; impenetrability of physical bodies.
  4. Firmness of mind; stability not to be shaken.
  5. (printing) A proof sheet; a trial impression, as from type, taken for correction or examination.
  6. (mathematics): A process for testing the accuracy of an operation performed. Compare prove, transitive verb, 5.
  7. (obsolete): Armour of excellent or tried quality, and deemed impenetrable; properly, armour of proof.
  8. (US) A measure of the alcohol content of liquor. Originally, in Britain, 100 proof was defined as 57.1% by volume (not used anymore). In the US, 100 proof means that the alcohol content is 50% of the total volume of the liquid, and thus, absolute alcohol would be 200 proof.

What kind of proof do you need to use the Apple Education discount in a retail store?
Q. My mom is on the school board and I want to get the discount. Can she just tell them that she is on the board? Or does she have to bring in some kind of proof?
Asked by Sarah - Sat Jul 18 22:40:52 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments

A. School board appointees might not qualify. Teachers have to prove that they are teachers with documentation from the school where they teach. If a school board appointee qualifies, they will need proof of being on the school board, and that person has to actually buy the product. You cannot have mom produce her proof, then you put it on your credit card.

What is the cheapest way to sound proof my garage?
Q. I want to reduce the noise going into my house by sound proofing my garage and I don't want to spend a fortune. What would you recommend? I need it to deafen the sound. I am going to put it on 4 bare brick walls, A thick fire proof door and the ceiling. I want to keep the sound in and not let it out

A. "Cheapest" depends on what you have access to. My friend had a band who needed to practice in their row home basement and not be heard by neighbors. They went around collecting old carpeting for weeks. They mounted it on all the walls/ceiling and in the access ways they rolled it onto a piece of pvc pipe and created a curtain that they could raise and lower. They also built insulation boxes around any structural beams that could transmit the vibration to the neighbors walls. Air is the best transmitter of sound vibration. The best way to deaden sound is to create air gaps that aren't exposed to the sound between you and the area you want to keep quiet. That's how any insulation works. It's not the material itself (fiberglass, foam)… [cont.]

How do I have wedding pictures printed off the proof album?
Q. The photographer we hired for our daughter's wedding took months to get the wedding proof album to us. She has been absolutely impossible to get ahold of to order pictures. It has been over a year. All we have is the proof book. Is there anyway to have pictures printed off the proof book. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

A. I agree with the 2 first answers. Whatever you do, DON'T make prints from the proofs for several reasons. First of all, they're smaller for a reason. Try blowing them up and the quality is going to be terrible. Secondly, those pictures are copyrighted and regardless your story, the photographer can have you penalized for copyright infringement.
